Den 29. maj – 2. juni i Verdenskulturcentret, København opførtes installationen til projektets anden del under titlen: absorption (2: global child). Personlige fortællinger om små børns fascinationer hentet fra Ghana, Indien og Danmark var udgangspunktet for installationen. Børnene havde ledt på sporet af nogle vigtige elementer, som vi omgiver os med i hverdagen – og gennem disse blev publikum inviteret til at opleve ikke bare børnenes, men også de voksnes globale verden på ny.

Workshop at Performers House in Silkeborg, Denmark

The 17th-20th of February 2009 the ensemble line and the theater line at Performers House participated in a workshop dedicated to the “instructions” given by the little boy Paa Kwesi from Ghana (see description of the work below). Taking a point of departure in photos and video of the boy, the students worked with the movements of the boy, the objects, with which he was playing, and the possible atmosphere of sounds and smells in his surroundings. After testing and improvising with these aspects, the work was focused on different ways to disseminate to an audience the impressions and experiences that the students had gained from the material. In the end a test performance installation was made, in which information and facts about Ghana were blended into an idiosyncratic setting inspired by the Ghanaian child. A showing was made for a test spectator. He among other things commented, that he had received the information about Ghana more attentively in the context of the test performance installation, than he would have had if just reading it in a book.

The students, who participated in the workshop, will soon be going on a trip to Ghana; and the work, which was initiated in this workshop, will be developed further aiming towards a performance installation in Verdenskulturcentret in Copenhagen this spring.

Eksperiment: empati

Det er dette projekts udgangspunkt, at empati grunder i en kropslig erindring, efterligning og genkendelse af sanseindtryk og bevægelser.

Med projektets første performanceinstallation vil vi skabe rammer, der gør, at publikum bevæger sig og oplever ting, fænomener og mennesker på måder, som tilnærmer sig barnets. Målet er at skabe empati med, og respekt for, barnets aktive, intelligente og følelsesmæssige liv de første leveår.

Det helt unge barn ’lærer’ ikke; det absorberer – tager verden ind, åben for de uendelige mængder af nye indtryk. Vi finder det interessant at udforske denne perceptionsform nærmere og at finde redskaber til at opleve reminiscenser af den. Efter vores opfattelse kan det være en god træning i at være åben over for vores omverdenen, hvor fremmed den end til tider måtte forekomme.

Performanceinstallationen er bygget op omkring “instruktioner” fra drengen Saanjh. Hans “instruktioner” har bestået i ting og fænomener, som har optaget ham i særlig grad i det første år af hans liv.

Vigtige instruktioner (arbejdsoverskrifter): Vindue, Lampe, Tekstur, Hænder, Vand, Vaskemaskine, Krystalkugle, Spejl, Bøger, Skeer, Øjenvipper, Hår, Dåser, Kasser, Papir, Sten.

Vigtige anskuelsesvinkler: Bevægelse, sansning, tid

Experiment: empathy

A main point of departure for this project is a concept of empathy as founded in bodily memory, imitation and recognition of sense impressions and movements.

In the first performance installation we want to create contexts that can bring the audience closer to the child’s experience of movement, things, phenomena and other human beings.
The baby child does not “learn”, he/she absorbs – takes the world in – open to the endless amounts of new impressions. We find it interesting to explore further this way of perceiving, and to find tool to experience reminiscences of it. It is our assumption that this could be a good training in being open towards our surroundings, however foreign it may appear.

The performance installation is constructed around “instructions” from the boy Saanjh. His “instructions” consist of objects and phenomena, which he has been given special attention in the first year of his life.

Important “instructions” are: Window, lamp, texture, hands, water, washing machine, crystal ball, mirror, books, spoons, eye lashes, hair, cans, paper, stones.
Important target areas: movement, sensation, time.

Lydlandskabet er komponeret af de lyde, som publikum vil opleve på deres vej igennem forestillingen. De højfrekvente lyde er filtreret fra, der er tilføjet lyd af hjertebanken og tilstræbt en konstant rytmisk støj for at tilnærme lydene i livmoderen.

The sound scape is composed of the sounds, which the audience will experience on their way through the performance installation. The high frequent sounds are filtered away, there has been added sound of heart beat and a constant rhythmic noise to create resemblance with the sounds in the womb.
